Prof. Dr. Nikolai Axmacher (Project Lead for A02, A03, and F03) studies the neural basis of memory and navigation. His research focuses on so-called grid cells, which play an important role not only in spatial orientation but also in the internal representation of knowledge and cognitive functions such as memory, learning, and decision-making.
Since grid cells are located in a region of the brain that is among the first to be affected by Alzheimer’s disease, changes in these cells could also provide clues about the early stages of the disease. Axmacher expects that the combination of biomarkers and sophisticated cognitive tests will, in the future, enable a personalized assessment of disease risk even before the first symptoms appear.
Axmacher works with high-resolution imaging techniques at the Erwin L. Hahn Institute. The institute’s unique methodological expertise enables research approaches that would be virtually impossible to carry out elsewhere.
