Every year, Stanford University and the publisher Elsevier publish a list of the top two percent of highly cited scientists worldwide. The list is based on the Elsevier database Scopus.
The influence of scientific publications is evaluated by combining citation metrics and other bibliometric information such as position as first or last author into a score. The scientists are divided into 22 scientific fields with a total of 174 sub-fields. From each of the 174 scientific sub-fields, the two percent of scientists with the highest scores are included in the overall list.
