New season and new logo: Kannste Vergessen “An atlas for the brain”

Welcome to the fourth season of “Kannste Vergessen?”! We’re back from our break and looking forward to another journey into extinction learning – with the usual detours into related areas, of course. And we’re treating ourselves to a little refreshment for the new season: new jingle, new logo and new ideas. We start with a conversation about an old dream of science: a truly accurate atlas for the brain.

We’ve talked a lot about brain research, brain areas and brain functions, but never in depth about the “brain itself”. That’s why we want to talk about the big picture of this organ and, above all, how we actually research and record what is located where in the brain. And when you talk about so-called mapping in brain research, you very quickly come across a name: Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Katrin Amunts. Katrin Amunts is a medical doctor and, among other things, Professor of Brain Research at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and Director of the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine at Forschungszentrum Jülich. We are delighted that she has taken the time to talk to Rainer Holl about brain atlases, mapping technology, the human brain and her work. And she also introduces you to the Human Brain Project, which Katrin Amunts led until 2023 and in which the so-called Big Brain was created: an incredibly accurate reference brain atlas for free use by everyone.
