The RUB news portal reports:

How could humans develop such a large and complex brain? Researchers have identified a significant factor.

The large and intricately folded neocortex gives us humans many of our intellectual abilities and thus distinguishes us from all other species. A research team led by Dr. Tran Tuoc from the Department of Human Genetics at the RUB Medical Faculty has identified an important factor that could have led to this brain development in the course of evolution: the so-called H3 acetylation of basal neuronal precursor cells. This finding could also open up ways to treat neurodegenerative diseases. The work is published in the journal Science Advances, 15 September 2021.
